Fire woman

September 2011 - Bombera, Bogota, Colombia

'Bombera', the story of a 42-old fire fighter, was just awarded 1st prize in the photo contest from the BID (Banco Interamericano de Desarollo), with Boxeadora (see below) as a runner-up.

Sergeant Gladis Janneth Velasquez is 42 years old and has been with the "Cuerpo Oficial de Bomberos" in Bogota for 22 years. She has 2 kids, an 18-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy. Her husband is also a fire fighter. She is very proud of her job. The worst part of her career was in the early 90's when there were a lot of terrorist bombings in the city.
The Bogota Fire Department consists of 486 men and only 35 women.
