Month 108 - January 2013 - Arenero, Viterbo, Colombia

The Arenero or Sand scraper is one of the heaviest and worst paid jobs I ever shot. An Arenero goes onto a river in a canoe, puts a ladder into the river, dives down with a steel bucket, scrapes sand off the bottom, climbs back up and dumps it into the canoe. A full canoe (which is almost a day's work) is worth about 2 dollars. The fine sand is used as an ingredient for cement.
